Dentistry1Dental disease is widespread among dogs and cats, as many as 85% showing symptoms by three or four years of age. Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection in the gums surrounding your pet’s teeth. The bacteria forms a plaque that eventually hardens into the tartar seen on the tooth surface.

If periodontal disease is left untreated, the following can result and may be signs you observe:

• Chronic pain
• Tooth destruction, receding gums
• Damage to vital organ structure (Kidneys, Liver, Heart)
• Excessive salivation
• Reluctance to eat
• Bad breath
• Bumps/lumps in the mouth

Fortunately, with the advanced dental procedures at Town and Country Veterinary Clinic, we can eliminate pain and discomfort associated with this disease with a combination of routine home health care and regular dental cleanings. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is best to bring your pet in for a veterinary visit. Prevention is much less expensive than tooth extraction!

Routine health care can assist in preventing periodontal disease. For example, you can:

• Provide your dog or cat a dental chew (C.E.T.)
• Add a drinking water additive to freshen breath (Breathalyser)
• Brush your pet’s teeth daily with enzymatic toothpaste
